It’s hard to believe, but it’s already time for college students to get their plans together for moving back to school!
The fall semester is less than two months away and for those heading off to campus for their first time (or any time), it can be quite the process. From figuring out your class schedule to getting all the things you’ll need to live on your own, there’s a lot to think about!
Thankfully, we’ve learned a thing or two when it comes to college moves– both into dorm rooms and off-campus housing – and have picked up on several tips that’ll make your move-in day a breeze.
Build a moving plan
The best thing you can do to is create a plan ahead of time. Start with a packing checklist and ensure to include all of the essential items you’ll need to take with you to school. When packing, wrap fragile items with professional packing equipment to ensure they don’t get broken, and try to use professional moving boxes for packing – these can be reused later when it’s time to move out!
Check the layout of your dorm and what’s nearby
Generally, you’ll be able to get online and find a layout of your floor plan, dorm layout, or the layout of your off-campus housing. This is important because it will give you a picture of the size and dimensions of your living space, which will help you in the planning process as you figure out what to bring.
Finding out what’s nearby is always important because you might be able to leave a few things at home if your favorite store, shop, or grocery store is close!
Determine what’s important and what’s not needed
If there’s one big takeaway you should have from living in college housing, it’s this: space is limited! With that in mind, you need to be honest with yourself about everything you bring and determine if it’s worth it or not. Leave anything behind at home that you don’t need to save yourself space in your living area – you can always purchase it later or have family bring it, if needed!
Bring items to give your living space a personal feel
While away from home, family, and friends, this is an important step in building comfort in your day-to-day life. Bring any type of decor, pictures, posters, or personal items that will help you feel comfortable and give your room some personality. This can go a long way in easing you into the process of moving and feeling at home in your new space!
Additionally, here are some important items all college students should consider bringing with them to campus:
- Sanitary items: This could be anything from paper towels, toiletries, cleaning products like Lysol or sanitizing products, and more.
- First aid kit: In the case of any emergency or injury, you’ll want first aid essentials nearby and any necessary medications.
- Towels: You will need these for bathing or any swimming opportunities.
- Fan: It can get pretty hot in dorms, be sure to bring a fan for comfortable room temperature control.
- Racks and storage bins: Try to keep things organized; you’ll make much better use of your space with these organizational tools.
- Trash cans and bags: Keep your room tidy by having trash cans nearby.
- Any necessary cords: You will need to make sure you have your charging cords and extension cords accessible in your room.
- Shower items: You’ll need all your shower goods like the basics (shampoo, conditioner, bar of soap, etc.) but also keep in mind you may need a shower caddy to hold everything. Flip flops will also come in handy for the bathroom trip.
